Juvenile Justice Commission
The Mission of the Orange County Juvenile Justice Commission is to inquire into the administration of juvenile court law in this county and to ensure that the highest standards of care and services are maintained for the youth within the juvenile justice system.
Overview of the Juvenile Justice Commission (JJC)
Under the mandates of the California Welfare and Institutions Code (WIC), the JJC conducts announced and unannounced inspections of police departments temporarily housing juveniles, county operated juvenile facilities, and group homes where wards and dependent children of the Juvenile Court are placed. The Commission also inspects and reviews operations and programs of the Youth Correctional schools and monitors medical/mental health programs within the facilities.
The Commission is comprised of not less than 7 and no more than 15 citizens, two of the positions are youth members between the ages of 14 and 21. The Commissioners are appointed by the Presiding Judge of the Superior Court with the concurrence of the Presiding Judge of the Juvenile Court and serve a four-year term. Although the commissioners are volunteers, they receive a legally mandated stipend of $25.00 per regularly scheduled meeting, not to exceed two meetings per month.
