Judge Tam Nomoto Schumann, of the Superior Court of Orange County, was elected President-Elect of the American Judges Association (AJA) at that organization’s recent annual meeting in Vancouver. Judge Schuman has been a member of AJA since 2003, and has served on the Board of Governors, Secretary, and Vice President of the Association.
Judge Schumann was appointed to the Municipal Court in 1979 by Governor Brown, Jr., and was elected to the Superior Court of Orange County in 1997. Before becoming a judge, she was a deputy in the Orange County Counsel’s Office from 1974 to 1977, and was in private practice.
Judge Schumann received her B.A. in History from the University of California, Berkeley, Berkeley, California. She received her J.D. from the University of California, Berkeley, Boalt Hall School of Law in 1973.
The American Judges Association represents more than 2,400 judges from all levels of jurisdiction in the United States and Canada. It was established in 1959 as the National Association of Municipal Judges with the goals of promoting and improving the effective administration of justice, maintaining the status and independence of the judiciary, and providing a forum for the continuing education of its members.
